During his training, he spent a year working in dementia specialist nursing care. The results were tangible: the home was even awarded the city’s annual ‘Most Inclusive Care Provision’ award, in recognition of the work that Henry did using music therapy to connect residents and their families. In one case, the nurses even measured a reduction in anti-psychotic medication for a resident who was receiving music therapy.
What is music therapy?
Music therapy sessions are lead by the resident (or residents in group sessions), supported by a therapist. In these sessions, the music therapist works to bring residents into an experience of music-making. For those who are able, this may take the form of improvising on instruments or with the voice, or singing familiar songs. For others, the music therapist may work to bring their physicality into an experience of music-making. For example, they might work to accompany a resident’s breathing, and any slight movements or vocalisations they make. The music therapist then works to support and value the resident’s musical offering. This can form a powerful experience of connectedness for those experiencing isolation. For those whom language is no longer possible, or is a source of frustration and distress, music can offer an alternative means of communication and expressivity.
Through this collaboration, other goals become possible. These might include, but are not limited to:
Providing opportunities for a resident to experience agency, control and independence
Promoting, and perhaps developing, a resident’s sense of identity
Promoting social connections with relatives, visitors, staff and other residents.
